China Help Establish Warcraft As The Biggest Video Game Movie Ever

Despite receiving harsh criticism and massive drops in moviegoers in the US, the Warcraft movie still managed to become the biggest video game movie ever, thanks to a little (well, a lot actually) help from China and the rest of the world.

Warcraft Movie Orc

Opening to a dismal weekend of $24 million and a follow-up of $6.5 million in its second weekend, the Warcraft movie by Duncan Jones was dead-on-arrival over in the US, especially given the fact it only made a fraction of the $160 million it cost to make the movie.

However, elsewhere in the world, the numbers tell a different story for the Warcraft movie. In total, Warcraft has made $339 million overseas which adds up to about $377 million, beating out Prince of Persia‘s record of $336 million.

The biggest contributor to the numbers? China. And they really loved the movie as over $200 million comes from China alone. China is widely known to be one of Warcraft‘s biggest fanbase so it should be no surprise the movie would have its best performance there. Turns out, it performed so well that it made Warcraft the video game movie of all time. With these numbers, it’s safe to assume that another Warcraft movie will be in the works if China-owned Legendary Pictures wants to capitalize on the franchise.

If you’re not into the Warcraft movie, why not jump back into World of Warcraft instead? World of Warcraft: Legion expansion is expected to launch on August 30th, 2016. You can purchase the expansion at OffGamers for both the US and European version.
