Is A Remake For Final Fantasy XII On The Way?

Could a remake be coming for Final Fantasy XII on current generation consoles? If composer Arnie Roth is to be believed, it seems that we might be getting a remake sooner than later.

During a Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concert in Pittsburgh, Roth was talking about the Final Fantasy VII remake before casually mentioning that “there is a Final Fantasy XII remake underway,” and also added that it will be coming “soon.” You can check out the video embedded below to hear the announcement.

Now, before we jump to conclusions, there have been no official announcement from Square Enix regarding this remake. The other point to note, Roth might have meant to say remaster rather than remake. Recently, Square Enix had published the enhanced versions of Final Fantasy X and X-2, a follow-up to that with a Final Fantasy XII remaster would sound much more plausible.

Out of the entire Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy XII is the only iteration of the series that has not made the jump from the Playstation 2 onto current generation consoles. If Square Enix were to announce the remake/remaster, it would definitely come during this week’s Gamescom.

Holding the Guinness World Record for the longest development period, Final Fantasy XII was released in 2006 on Playstation 2 after suffering numerous delays when Lead Creative Yasumi Matsuno had to leave the project midway due to serious illness

The game was a massive departure from previous iterations of Final Fantasy with its unique gameplay system, such as developing tactical plans that’s specific to each character (similar to Dragon Age: Origins). It was also the first Final Fantasy to allow players to avoid random encounters.

This has caused the game to be in the camp of “love it or hate it” with those that love the new mechanic felt it was a breath of fresh air to the series, and those who didn’t like it, thought that the game didn’t stay true to the roots of Final Fantasy.

Keep it tuned to OffGamers where we’ll update as soon as any new information comes out for the Final Fantasy XII remake.
