Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Overview

One of the most popular RPGs these days is the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. In this game, the player will take on the role of a ranger named Talion who possesses Wraith like abilities. It is an open world video game where players are given the freedom to chase side quests and then roam all over the world.
Players can also build new characters and will be able to customize Talion, the main character.

Talion can be customized with the use of the Nemesis system that will remember the interactions of the players to a specific type of character that they get to encounter all throughout the game.

The enemies also begin to develop as soon as Talion gets to interact with them. For instance, an Uruk character that got thrown by Talion into the fire could try and get revenge for getting him disfigured and burned.

Players will also have an option to level up Talion’s abilities as a ranger. The ranger abilities will make Talion to be able to move silently all throughout the entire environment, and thus, he will not attract the attention of his enemies.

Another level up option is the Wraith abilities wherein Talion will have the abilities to impose his will against his enemies and make them gather information for his benefit, including spreading tales of Talion in order to lessen their morale or perhaps, assassinate the leaders.

The Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor has an interesting setting, taking place in between the event of the Hobbit as well as The Lord of The Rings. The game begins with Talion being part of a Gondor garrison that is stationed right at the Black Gate. The garrison will then be attacked by the Uruk forces of Sauron that is led by three Black Númenórean captains.

Game Description

The Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is an RPG game, or an action role playing video game that was developed by Monolith Productions. Set in the Lord of the Rings Universe, the game was released by Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment.

Taking place during the gap events in between the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings sagas, the game was first released in the Microsoft Windows format, as well as the PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox One and the Xbox 360. Initially, the game was scheduled to be released on October 7, 2014 but was moved to September 30. However, in Australia, it was released on October 8.

In August of 2013, an artist has leaked some information about the development of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor where he mentioned that Monolith Productions has been working on a new title that is separate from the Guardians of Middle-earth.

Three months after, it was announced that the game will be called the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, written by Christian Cantamessa, who happens to be the lead designer and writer for Red Dead Redemption.

The soundtrack of the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was composed by Nathan Grigg and Garry Schyman and a digital album was released for this soundtrack last September 2014 by the Water Tower Music.

The Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor has received lots of positive responses from game critics all over the world. Some of the gaming review sites have given its PlayStation 4 version a rating of 85.74%. Another critic has also given the game a perfect score due to its solid combat, excellent story and the great overall execution.

However, there are also critics who have given the game a low rating of 6 over 10, for they feel that the game was not able to deliver everything that the gamers are expecting.

Pros

The remarkable Nemesis system is one of the reasons why Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor has become one of the most impressive role playing video games of all time. The system creates an ideal world where life would seem to move on regardless of what Talion, the main character, is doing.

The system gives an endless cycle of side content, thinking that it will be difficult to feel unsatisfied right at the end of the game given the amount of the game play that was featured.

Another great thing about playing the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is that it helps to make the player feel over the top powerful without the need to sacrifice the fear of defeat. It features exciting free flowing combat and an open world that is filled with Lord of the Rings lore.

Cons

The game also comes with some flaws. For one, it was not able to deliver everything that it is expected to do. Secondly, the story appears to be generic, which is something that you would normally find in any role playing game.

The Nemesis system, although it is really impressive, still lacks some things. The orcs do not come with unique personalities and it seems like all of the enemies in the game are all the same. Another downside is the ending of the game which is a bit unfulfilling.

Verdict

What really makes the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor to stand out from the rest of the open world action games is its ability to put some great new layer right on top of the trail which Batman has blazed. The developers have done a great job in integrating the excellent combat in the game and truly, it will give you an exciting gaming experience due to the unpredictable battles.

You cannot expect the same experience with those games that come with scripted campaign missions. There may be times that you will experience some occasional stutter all throughout the game, yet these are worth it as soon as you reach the level that consists of graphical adrenaline. Perhaps, the game would work well in lower settings.

But what really make the game special are the scenes that are going on in the background which consist of the intriguing hierarchy of the enemies which gives both victory and defeat some added meaning. Indeed, the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is certainly worth trying especially if you’re a fan of the Lord of the Rings franchise.
