Overwatch Closed Beta Is Set For A February Return On PC

If you have been waiting to get back to Overwatch’s Closed Beta, it looks like you’ll have to wait just a bit longer. Blizzard has just recently announced that the Closed Beta for Overwatch will make its return on mid-February.

Overwatch Closed Beta

Previously, the Overwatch Closed Beta was scheduled to make its return in mid-to-late January, unfortunately, it seems that Blizzard wasn’t able to reach that that target. On a post on Blizzard’s official forum, Game Director Jeff Kaplan went into details as to why the Closed Beta was pushed back to February instead of the planned January return.

“While progress has been great and the team has been working super hard to get everything implemented on time. we’re not quite ready to bring the Closed Beta back online just yet.” He continued, “We’ve been pretty open about the fact that we could slip into February from the beginning, but a big reason for this delay is that we really wanted to add one more big feature to the next patch.”

That big feature is a new game mode for the next Closed Beta. While no details were given as to what the new game mode will be, Kaplan went into detail on what the team at Blizzard are doing to prepare for the new game mode.

“Rather than try to push a beta patch out this month (which would mean the new game mode would have to be put off), we’re going to take a few extra weeks before bringing the Closed Beta back. By doing so, we can make sure we can include the new game mode along with the new maps.”

More maps are always better, but the additional time will not only allow for more maps. It also gives Blizzard time to further polish the game. “This will also allow us to do some additional polish to the game’s progression and reward system. Though all these features will still technically be a work-in-progress during the beta, we’d like them to be at a certain quality bar before releasing them for testing.”

While it’s not great that the Closed Beta had to be pushed back, it comes with the caveat that an improved experience and new game mode coming should keep the sting of the delay a bit softer to fans. If you were part of the earlier beta, you will still be able to join in. For those that wish to opt-in on the beta, head over to Battle.net to find out more.

Overwatch is expected for release on June 21st, 2016. Players can pre-purchase the game in multiple platforms. A PC-only digital edition will cost $39.99. A physical/digital Origins Edition will be available on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One for $59.99. The Limited Collector’s Edition will also be available on all platforms for $129.99.
