Sega states that the Mega Drive Mini is being released together with the console’s 30th anniversary, along with a number of classic games. Hardware company AtGames will be responsible with the production of the console, which the company has also done retro Atari consoles to make Genesis clones, such as the Sega Genesis Flashback. AtGames disclosed on Facebook that the upcoming Mega Drive Mini will be powered by its hardware. The device looks like it is following in precisely the exact same concept as Nintendo’s popular NES Classic and SNES Classic devices, which allowed gamers to play many different pre-loaded games.

Sega was interested in getting back into the hardware business, following the extremely successful Nintendo’s retro console. Sega exited the hardware business after the failure of the Sega Dreamcast in 2001. The first Mega Drive was released in Japan on October 29th, 1988, and in North America on August 14th, 1989, with over 30 million devices sold globally.
