Tax Law Forces Steam To Increase Prices For Games

Starting in March, Valve had no choice but to increase Steam’s costs across ten different countries to comply with new tax regulations involving sales tax on services and digital goods.

Steam partners received an email from the organization that these following countries will likely be adding region appropriate sales tax to all purchases, in the months recorded:

March 2017:

  • Switzerland 8%
  • South Korea 10%
  • Japan 8%
  • New Zealand 15%
  • Iceland 24%
  • South Africa 14%
  • India 15%

April 2017:

  • Serbia 20%

May 2017:

  • Taiwan 5%

July 2017:

  • Australia 10%

The email indicates that tax amounts will be contained in the advertised cost of the games on Steam, to cater with how VAT is handled in the EU.

“This means the customer will pay the price displayed on the storefront, and the tax will be separated out afterwards,” it reads.

This might be a good time to buy some game in your wishlist before the price hike. The extra tax will be included in each game’s price on Steam to make things more visible for buyers when it’s rollout in March.
