The Crew

Overview

The Crew is one of the most popular arcade racing games right now. Failure and success might seem equally bizarre for this game which features the most detailed and by far the most expansive playground of driving game that has taken place for years, giving players the freedom to roam around on each and every highway, including dirty tracks and city blocks, along with friends.

It sounds really interesting, right? This game is a plot driven and always online driving game where you get to play as a street racer. You will pose as an undercover cop and pretend as a diehard street racer.

At times, you will need to drive through the wilderness in order to find some comms towers that will unblock certain activities in your map.

The game begins with a narrative and heavy prologue where the plot is similar to the famous Fast and Furious film and has everything that you would need for an exciting racing game – illegal drag racing, FBI involvement, menacing electronic music, several scores to settle, and so much more.

You will then be introduced to prominent gameplay systems and it is clear that this game expects for you to stick around for a long haul. The last five disciplines are dirt, street, performance, circuit and raid, which will be unlocked on the 40th level of the game.

Thankfully, the game will also give you that freedom to clear away the prologue. You will have the freedom to ignore the story missions that will be pinging on the mini map from time to time and you can drive through Detroit going to New York in just a whim.

What’s more, you will have the freedom to invite your friends to join you in The Crew and you can all just drive in, taking in the wonderful sights of the Florida Beach as you navigate your way.

The world map is so far the best asset of the game and it is packed with enough environmental variation so you will not have a culture shock when you get to the gaudy Las Vegas strip right after cruising through the very serene scenery on the mountainside.

Game Description

The Crew is an immense and unique racing game that boasts an ambitious world of preposterous proportions that it ought to become the year’s most extraordinary technical accomplishment.

Its vast size however, may have taken a toll on the game’s visuals and effects. But the best thing about the game is perhaps its stylized and scaled down map version of the entire United States.

The cities have been shown as shrunken caricatures, although the only truly sweeping tracts of land in between them means that traversing through it will indeed capture the true spirit of a city to city and cross country road trip, way better than any other driving and racing game ever created.

Most of those games curate several different backdrops through its track selections, from the urban street races, down to the major American metropolitan centers, up towards the icy blasts of snow swept mountains and flat out sprints all across the desert heat, or perhaps, that muddy expedition through the giant Sequoia forests.

The Crew has admirably done everything on this single game to make the lengthy driving session even more exciting.

Players will be treated to a fairly good selection of main missions dangling through the narrative thread all throughout the game and you will mostly be partaking on some standard racing events, while escaping away from the cops, or perhaps, chasing down the vehicle of an enemy.

Later on, you will be treated to off road barrel smashing adventures and multi class races that will put you on a slower car that is nonetheless will be able to take shortcuts which your opponent cannot do.

The mission could get repetitive. However, the location will be pleasurably changing. In one moment, you will be negotiating through the grid layout of Manhattan and at a later time, you will be tearing up a dirt track while you weave through the Louisiana bayou.

Pros

There are certainly lots of great things about The Crew and it’s no wonder why it is considered one of the best racing games of all time. Here are some of the great things about the game.
Amazing GPS Navigation dynamically shows you on what way you should be driving and it changes depending on whether you have altered your route or not.

• The world map is the best asset of the game, packed with enough environmental variations.
• The short mini-challenges are challenging and fun.
• You will drive your way through so many interesting sights while you pass through the major cities in The United States.

Cons

While the The Crew is certainly a game that is so hard to resist, it also has some minor drawbacks and here are some of them.

• The game has struggled to find a balance in between handling a simulation game as well as an arcade racer game.
• Being that it is a massively multiplayer online game, it requires you to be online at all times to be able to play the game.

Verdict

Perhaps, if The Crew has focused on doing that one thing well enough, then it would have been a much better game. However, by trying to incorporate some themes from the Fast and Furious and Need for Speed, it spreads too thinly and in the end, exposes some flaws of the whole operation of the game.

These flaws have become more pertinent through the various uninspired missions of the game that sometimes you will be asked to drive from point A to point B as quickly as possible just because the narrative tells you so.

Nevertheless, The Crew no doubt has delivered an exciting racing experience all throughout the game and it is one that improves as you go on and on. The missions are truly challenging, testing your speed, control, and your off-road abilities as well. Indeed, the game is a real momentum builder.
