Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs a popular action adventure video game unleashed on 27 May 2014. It is an open world game for Microsoft and has been developed by Ubisoft Montreal. The game is meant for the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. There is also a Wii U version of the game and it is scheduled to be released in the 4th quarter of 2014. The location of the game is set in a fictional Chicago Illinois. It is a single player story that is about a hacker and his desperate efforts to seek revenge for his niece who dies in an accident. The open world set up permits the players to roam freely in Chicago. The player here gets exposure to the open countryside, city and slums. The Watch Dog Review gives an insight into what is so special in this game and how does it score when compared to other games available in the market today-

Overview

Watch Dogs is played from the angle of a third person and it can be navigated via foot or vehicle. Gamers in the game control the movements of Alden Pearce, who is an experienced hacker with the ability to hack into a centralized operating system called ctOS. This controls the hyper connected Chicago City and it was formed after a Northeast blackout of 2003 caused by the hacker. Players have the option to play as criminals or vigilantes. There is also an online multi-player mode available for gamers where up to 8 players can play in competitive and co-operative gameplay on a single player setting. The development of Watch Dogs started in 2009 after much research by the designing team. The duties of development were shared between many studios of Ubisoft across the globe.

Game Description

The plot of this game focuses on the exploits of the hacker Aiden Pearce. He is also a natural vigilante and a little bit boring. He does at times gets bouts of self-introspection and becomes hypocritical at times. Before the real action begins, there is Aiden and his partner Damien getting involved in a risky hotel job. This is one mission that goes totally wrong and both of them are up against an anonymous villain now all set against Aiden. Aiden’s niece dies in the crossfire and this sets off a classic tale of a single man’s quest for revenge and seeking answers. The game has a lot of technical elements however it is the list of human emotions that carry the game forward.

Pros

The biggest strength of Watch Dogs is that it is diverse, huge and detailed. The gaming interface really is impressive with the rural area of Pawnee that balances the urban sprawl of Chicago. The gameplay runs very smoothly and this makes the interface good. The characters have been done up elegantly. With the press of a button you are able to know some facts and figures of the citizens around you. The information and the names you gather are generated randomly. This means at your fingertips, you get the advantages of having a complete city infrastructure to control. The interaction you have with the people when on your mission is either to steal from them or shoot them. The guns work very well in the game. They are simple to use and they aim straight. These guns also have many bullets and the game progresses well. The central character is at his best when he is on foot. He successfully creeps into enemy compound and uses his phone to hack into the camera systems as well as the enemy locations before he finally disappears into the shadows. Some of the best levels are not too complicated and they involve elaborate and combat free puzzles. Here, players are required to hack doors open to find the circuit breakers.

Cons

While playing, there are regular slowdowns especially when the mission of the new objectives is being loaded. The irony of the game is when something interesting happens they are not noticeable and the storyline gets worse. Besides being a potential game, the interface has a number of shortcomings and limitations that may annoy the gamer. Some missions are very bad. There are several hidden diversions and this makes the gamer not sure on where the real location is. The moment Aiden gets behind wheels the game interesting as it is on foot. The character also appears fake when he talks to his nephew with a batman voice. The cars and some other vehicles in this game are also sluggish and they could have been improved by the designers of the game. There is another disadvantage of the game and that is the essence of the game is diluted. The side stories do make up for it. The designers and the makers of the game could have made the core game better and more interesting. Another pain in the neck to navigate is the smartphone system that the main character uses. It is very hard to navigate with the mouse.

Verdict

Watch Dogs is indeed a good game to play. However, the game does not focus on a single idea, it deals with too many ideas at a time. This is why players may lose interest quickly and high chance to quit the game entirely. There are some things that the game does well and there are others where it poorly scores. There are a number of pleasing challenges that are offered to the player and this makes the game all the more interesting. The game makes single button hacking an easy affair. The story line is a bit lengthy but it is adventurous too. It is a new game and if you look at it, you will find it does well to other newly launched games in the market today. In short, keeping the car chases aside Watch Dogs is one of the game that has been made well and considered to be good for players that are looking for long hours of action adventure from the comforts of any place!
