World Of Warcraft - Wrath Of The Lich King - Death Knight Lore | | By Josh Elkins
The next update to World of Warcraft (WOW), Wrath of the Lich King introduces the game's first hero class, the necromantic death kight. Here is a summary of the lore behind the death knight.
Warchief of the Horde, Orgrim Doomhammer was charged with the task of crushing the orc warlocks of the Shadow Council. Doomhammer spared the council's former master, Gul'dan, in exchange for his servitude. The warlock promised to create a host of powerful new warriors to serve the horde. After experimenting with the souls of the slain council members Gul'dan finally had success. He instilled the spirit of the fallen necrolyte Teron Goreflend into the corpse of a fallen knight of Stormwind. The first terrifying death knight was born. Gul'dan transformed other council members, creating unholy warriors who sowed chaos and fear in the land of Azeroth during the second war.
After Gul'dan's death, part of the Horde, including the death knights, retreated through the Dark Portal of Draenor. After Draenor's destruction, most of the death knights disappeared with the exception of one, Teron Goreflend. His restless and embittered form now resides in the Black Temple of Outland.
Years after Draenor's destruction, the powerful Lich King created a new breed of death knight; rune-wielding warriors of the scourge. The first and greatest was Prince Arthas Menethil. A paladin of the Silver Hand, he sacrificed his soul to claim the runeblade Frostmourne in a desperate bid to save his people.
Unlike the death knights of Gul'dan, the modern death knights consist mainly of paladins who lost their faith and pledged their souls to the Lich King in exchange for immortality. Death Knights who fall in battle are soon raised again to continue in their master's service.
The power and fury of the death knights has only grown in the years since Arthas shattered the Frozen Throne and merged with the Lich King. These crusaders of the damned await the Lich King's command to unleash their fury on Azeroth once again. |
