Fan-Made StarCraft RPG Open Beta Is Finally Live

StarCraft Universe went through quite the journey to finally release as an Open Beta. It all started with a mod, made by developer Upheaval Arts who wanted to create a full-fledged StarCraft MMO, titled World of Starcraft.

Unfortunately, at the time, Blizzard’s lawyers weren’t having any of that and ordered a cease and desist. Tthe developer then had to rename the game, relaunched it again with Blizzard’s approval and went to Kickstarter to take in $84,000 to create a finished version of the mod for StarCraft II.

Taking influences from games such World of Warcraft, Diablo, and FTL, the StarCraft Universe takes a different approach and timeline for StarCraft II.

“We wanted to combine the third person action RPG elements of World of Warcraft, the combat mechanics of Diablo, and the starship mechanics of FTL with the StarCraft setting,” says the developer in a Facebook post. “We wanted the game to be completely voice acted with a unique story, custom art assets, and a fresh musical score.”

It’s clear that the developers are making the mod up to standard with the full StarCraft II game itself. They even made a full CG trailer that’s as good as a Blizzard made CG trailer.

StarCraft Universe Open Beta is available now for download at Battle.net and requires you to have the StarCraft II game installed to play. If you need Battle.net Gift Cards, pick them up from OffGamers and receive them instantaneously!
