New “Nearby” Feature Added To Pokemon GO In Latest Patch

When Niantic removed the “Nearby Pokémon” tracker in the last update and essentially shutting down third-party support for tracking Pokémon in Pokémon GO, fans were decidedly unhappy about it.

It looks like Niantic is now taking steps to remedy the situation with a new Pokémon tracker, which was included in the latest update. The “nearby” function (or fix it seems) is called “Sightings” and is currently being tested on a small set of users.

The new tracker works by sending a “pulse” within the area every ten seconds to detect any Pokémon nearby. It then shows the list of Pokemon that’s available within your immediate that you can go and search for. While it still doesn’t give an exact location, it now regularly changes the list according to the spawning frequency.

In addition to that, there were plenty of other changes in the new update, here’s the full list below:

- Added a dialog to remind Trainers that they should not play while travelling above a certain speed. Trainers must confirm they are not driving in order to continue playing.
- Made improvements to the accuracy of a curveball throw
- Fixed a bug that prevented “Nice,” “Great,” and “Excellent” Poké Ball throws from awarding the appropriate XP bonuses.
- Fixed achievements showing incorrect Medal icons.
- Enabled the ability for Trainers to change their nickname one time. Please choose your new nickname wisely.
- Resolved issues with the battery saver mode on iOS and re-enabled the feature.
- Added visuals of Team Leaders Candela, Blanche, and Spark.
- We’re currently testing a variation of the “Nearby Pokémon” feature with a subset of users. During this period you may see some variations in the nearby Pokémon UI.
- Minor text fixes

It remains to be seen whether the new “Sightings” system will be released officially to the rest of the users. We’ll just have to wait until Niantic finishes testing it.
