Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has passed away at the age of 55, the company said in a brief statement addressing his passing.

Here’s a look at the notice in full

Nintendo

Satoru Iwata began his gaming career when he joined HAL Laboratory in the 1980s as a programmer following his graduation from university. Much of the success of Kirby can be attributed to Iwata, who created Dream Land in Kirby’s debut for the Game Boy in 1992. In 2000 he became the director of Nintendo, and was appointed President of Nintendo in May 2002. Iwata oversaw the launch of the GameCube, the Nintendo DS, 3DS, Wii and Wii U.

Iwata has regularly appeared in Nintendo Direct presentations to provide updates directly to fans over the past few years. Due to his sickness, he was force to undergo surgery and miss E3 2014. In October, he resumed his position, but his presence was again missed at E3 2015 in June. Currently, no interim president has been announced by Nintendo.

We (OffGamers) are deeply saddened by the news of Satoru Iwata passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. RIP Satoru Iwata.
