Nintendo Working On A Mini SNES, Launch Later This Year

Nintendo made a shocking announcement last week that they were discontinuing the NES Classic Edition to fans dismay. It was a weird move coming from Nintendo when the retro console received great response and sold out in days across the world.

A Nintendo representative gave a statement to IGN  “Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”

Amid the bad news from Nintendo, Eurogamer reported that the development of the mini SNES may have led to the discontinuation of the NES Classic Edition. A source close to Eurogamer also confirms that the mini SNES is planned for a Christmas launch and development of the SNES is well on its way.

While the NES Classic Mini comes with pre-installed 30 NES games, the SNES will definitely boasts better games lineup. We could only hope that games such as Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha, Star Fox, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, F-Zero, Super Mario Kart, Mega Man X and others are bundled along with the console.
