Salt And Sanctuary Is The 2D Dark Souls You’ve Always Wanted

Dark Souls is one the modern franchises that rabid fans adore and worship. It’s style, design, and combat sets it apart than most games, which is why many often try to emulate but fail. That is until Ska Studios took a shot at it.

Through the hard work of designer James Silva and art lead Michelle Silva (they are both married), Salt and Sanctuary is the 2D Dark Souls that every fan should play.

Salt and Sanctuary unabashedly wears its Dark Souls influences on its sleeve. From the gothic and dark atmospheric design to the mechanics that harkens back to Dark Souls, the homage is clear and well thought out.

Though, despite its obvious inspiration, the game doesn’t lazily slap on all these parts just to have a game with the moniker of a “2D Dark Souls“. No, Ska Studios went beyond that and truly encapsulates what makes Dark Souls a “Dark Souls” game into Salt and Sanctuary.

Salt And Sanctuary Gameplay

It is the terror that you feel every time you enter a new area with new enemies. It is the fear you feel when facing an insurmountable task of killing a boss enemy. It is the euphoric sense of victory when you vanquished it. Salt and Sanctuary does a remarkable job of capturing all that and translate it into a 2D action platformer.

With the added layer of quality combat and mechanics from Dark Souls (bonfires are shrines, Estus flasks are red flasks, and you lose salt instead of souls), the game makes for a praise-worthy homage to Dark Souls. One that fans of the series should take notice and try.

Salt and Sanctuary is now available for the PlayStation 4 and will come to PlayStation Vita and PC at a later date. Pick up some PSN Cards from OffGamers and receive your codes instantaneously to purchase Salt and Sanctuary!
