Stephen Gaghan To Direct Ubisoft’s ‘The Division’ Movie.

The film adaptation of Ubisoft’s video game thriller – The Division will be composed and directed by the Oscar-winning Stephen Gaghan. In addition to winning an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for Traffic, Gaghan has also directed Syriana and the Golden Globe-nominated Gold, starring Matthew McConaughey.

Ubisoft confirms that Stephen Gaghan will join celebrities Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain on this upcoming project. It’s set for launch in 2018.

“We are excited to collaborate with Jessica and Jake, two of Hollywood’s most talented actors and perfect creative collaborators to help bring Tom Clancy’s The Division to the big screen,” said Gerard Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer, Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “Attaching Jake and Jessica is part of our development philosophy of working closely with top talent from the earliest stages to collaborate on a high quality film,” added Matt Phelps, Vice President, Ubisoft Motion Pictures.

The Division, developed by Massive Entertainment, is set in Manhattan during a devastating viral outbreak throughout the Black Friday shopping boom. A terrorist cell laces a variety of bank notes using a modified strain of smallpox, bringing the city of New York to its knees as the virus spreads.

The Division is activated by the Strategic Homeland Division, an organization of highly-skilled, highly-armed sleeper agents trained to restore order and take control of New York, while the government scientists works on a cure.

Gaghan will undoubtedly be expecting that he’ll have significantly more success with The Division than Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed. Despite the best attempts of Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, Assassin’s Creed did not make an impact at the box office and its getting bad reviews everywhere.

It’ll be interesting to see if Gaghan as well as the formidable star power of Gyllenhaal and Chastain can bring The Division to life on the big screen.
