Tatsumi Kimishima The New Nintendo President

Nintendo’s new president will be Tatsumi Kimishima, who was elected to be as president for a single year, as announced today by the company alongside a corporate reorganization — two moves that are designed to “strengthen and enhance the management structure of the Company,” according to a statement from Nintendo.

Kimishima, 65, will be the fifth president of Nintendo. He will succeed Satoru Iwata, who had served in the role from May 2002 until his death on July 11 at the age of 55 due to a tumor in the bile duct. In the interim, Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda have been running Nintendo.

During an interview with Japanese newspaper The Nikkei, Kimishima shared some of the company future plans. Nintendo will still focus on smartphone and IP-related tasks. On top of that, Kimishima also mentioned that Nintendo will continue to develop new business strategies. He is also open to new ideas, such as having outsiders in running the company. This would be a huge change of course for Nintendo. Previous to the leadership of Iwata, who was definitely a company-insider, Nintendo had been led exclusively by members of the Yamauchi family.

Nintendo’s Board of Directors also granted new titles to Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda. Takeda, who was one of the architects of the Wii, will take the title of “technology fellow,” while Miyamoto, the famed game designer, will become Nintendo’s “creative fellow.” Nintendo’s statement defined the new role of “fellow” as “an individual selected from among the Representative Directors who has advanced knowledge and extensive experience, and holds the role of providing advice and guidance regarding organizational operations in a specialized area.”
