Team Fortress 2 Might Go eSports With Competitive Matchmaking

It looks like Valve will be adding a huge overhaul to the long-standing free-to-play FPS, Team Fortress 2. And that huge overhaul is the addition of Competitive Matchmaking for Team Fortress 2.

In a post by Valve on Team Fortress 2‘s Steam page, the Competitive Matchmaking is currently underway for the beta. Though not everyone will have initial access. The post indicates that more players will be brought in as they move along the beta stages.

“Our plan is to start small and increase participation as we go. For this initial phase of testing — which will begin in the next week or so — we’ll be gradually granting random members from this group an in-game item called a Competitive Matchmaking Beta Pass. Once you’ve been granted a pass you will have ongoing access to the beta.”

Aside from the beta, Valve will also be conducting stress-test events, both announced and unannounced, and will invite as many players to the event in order to test their systems at capacity. Throughout the stress-test event, selected players will not require a pass to play in the event.

While the pass and event selection will be random, priority will come to those with the following requirements:

- Have either purchased a copy of Team Fortress 2 prior to June 23, 2011 or have made a purchase from the Mann Co. Store. (AKA premium accounts)
- Have Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator enabled (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8625-WRAH-9030)
- Have a phone number associated with your Steam account (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8625-WRAH-9030#addphone)
