There Is A Minecraft 2 And It Is Fake

If you’ve been checking in on the Apple’s App Store recently, you might notice a certain intriguing title that’s climbing the top 10 grossing apps. And that particular title is none other than Minecraft: Pocket Edition 2. And it is fake.

Minecraft Pocket Edition 2

If you’ve been keeping up with Mojang, it should be clear that the developers have mentioned that they will not be making a sequel to the popular world-building sandbox. At least, not anytime soon. So imagine the surprise of many when they found out that Minecraft: Pocket Edition 2 was available for $10.99 on the Apps Store. It sounds too good to be true, and turns out, it was too good to be true as the game is not an official Mojang release.

While clones are a given in the open market of the app world, they are often rebranded or renamed to avoid direct copyright issues and merely copy the game mechanics. Minecraft: Pocket Edition 2 is blatant rip-off that, when booted up, looks nothing like Minecraft (it stars Scorpion from Mortal Kombat for some reason) but also crashes your phone after a few minutes.

The gameplay itself is basically a swiping combat game and that’s about it. Wesley Yin-Poole from Eurogamers gave the game a try and he did not have kinds words for it:

“Minecraft: Pocket Edition 2 is a terrible top-down swipe game in which zombies attack Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. I bought it and spent a few minutes “playing” it before it crashed my iPhone. If it isn’t already obvious, don’t buy it.”

Despite having such scathing reviews from gaming sites, the game still manages to break into the top 10 most grossing games in the App Store and receive five-star reviews. The sales could be from users who didn’t know the game was a fake, but the five-star rating is a bit questionable given how terrible the gameplay is.

In any case, by the time you’ve read, Mojang’s legal team would have probably done their job and taken down the fake sequel by now. If you’re itching to play Minecraft, we recommend getting the real game and enjoy what Minecraft is all about. Pick up the Minecraft game card for PC at OffGamers today if you don’t have the game!
